What is teeth whitening?

Most teeth whitening products involve applying gels to your teeth which contain specific concentrations of bleaching agents. These bleaching agents, like hydrogen peroxide, penetrate the enamel surface of teeth to remove the stains. This results in whiter or lighter teeth.

Over-the-counter whitening products generally involve using ineffective concentrations of active whitening ingredients, ill-fitting mouth trays that leak and sometimes abrasive substances that may cause damage to your gums and teeth.

Shailer Park Dental offers a combination of in-office and at-home treatments, which are tailored to your unique needs and involve custom-fitting a dental tray to use with the most effective whitening product.

How we assess your teeth
Shailer Park Dental will thoroughly assess your dental health before we commence any teeth whitening procedure. We will look at:

• The strength and thickness of the enamel on your teeth
• If there is any exposed dentine
• The health of your gums, and any receding of the gumline
• The structure of your teeth, including fillings, crowns or veneers.
• The presence of decay
• The sensitivity of your teeth

How we whiten your teeth
Your teeth are checked and cleaned to remove any calculus/tartar and food stains. An impression of your teeth is made to be sent to the dental laboratory where your customized bleaching trays are made. We might also photograph your teeth as a guide and record of your pre treatment colour.
Significant results can usually be seen within two weeks, but you might even notice a substantial improvement a few days. The length of time necessary for effective results will be determined by how severely your teeth are stained, type of stains and depth of staining. The effects of our treatments can last for several years, but in some cases the procedure may need to be repeated at regular intervals to maintain the whiteness of your teeth.

In Office Whitening
Some of our procedures will involve having treatment with us in our office. We may apply a protective substance to your gums before placing whitening gel directly to your teeth. This treatment is repeated in 15-20 minutes intervals for 1 hour. In office whitening gives you fast results but does have to be followed with a home bleaching kit for long term results. Shailer Park Dental advises this be done only if you required the whitening immediately.
